Auguste Perret was forty-seven when he met Marie Dormoy, who was thirty-five. He quickly understood the potential for notoriety he could gain from this budding art critic. Preparing the articles provided an opportunity for correspondence and encounters: Marie Dormoy became his best apologist and, three years later, his mistress. Love letters were followed by complaints, as he would never leave his wife. But their complicity endured, based on what had connected them: art. Almost no letter escaped it. He spoke of his clients, his projects, his classes, and his juries, and the two exchanged views on their reading, their daily lives, and their travels.
